My Growth as a Writer
I think it is safe to say that I have grown and improved myself as a writer this semester. In the beginning of this semester, I was lacking in my skills as a writer and I had no desire to improve myself as a writer. I had spent much of my time in high school and college convincing myself that I was not good at a writer and that I should just accept that fact. over the couse of the semester, I was able to prove to myself otherwise. The first evidence I noticed of how I was improving my writing was through blog posts and homework. The feedback a received from these assignments showed gradual improvement over the semester. What stuck out to me the most was the feedback I received from my rhetorical essay. For this essay, I just carefully took notes of the new writing concepts and techniques we learned in class sych as ethos, pathos, logos, and the purpose of rhetoric. I then applied these techniques to my essay and I was suprised how using these concepts really helped tie my entire essay together. I looked at this as evidence that it was possible to improve my abilities as a writer and that writing was not just limited to a cetain group of people with a certain writing personality.
My Goals as a Writer
I definitley consider myself to be a better writer than I was at the beginning of the semester. I have changed the ways I have approached writing in several ways. First of all, I was never able to use the concept of persuasion in my writing. I was not familiar with the use of different persuasion techniques. Now the way I will be approaching writing will be a bit different than the way I have done so in the past. One of the most important way, I think, is that fact that I will always take into consideration who my audience will be and what persuasion techniques/appeals I should use in my writing.
As the semester went on, I set a few goals for myself to improve my writing. My most important goal was to be able to effectively use persuasion in my writing. The way I wanted to get to this goal was through the assignment we completed in class and on our portfolio. I wanted to use each assignemnt as an opportunity to improve my writing.
Challenges I faced
Coming into this class, there were a few challenges that I faced as a writer and improving my writing. First of all, I had very little experience writing about myslef personally or giving my own personal opinion on certain topics. the only experience I had writing was very formal and non-personal. My past writing never included my own personal opinion and always relied on logic obtained from hours of research. Taking this class toook my a bit out of my comfort zone because I was not used to using emotion in my writing. Even though I was not used to the new forms of writing styles I learned, making myself use these new styles of writng eventually helped improve my writing as a whole.
Development as a Writer
To me, the most important aspect of this class was learning how to use rhetoric in my writing. I really had no idea what pathos, logos, or ethos were before I came to this class. The assignments that that helped foster my gowth as a writer were the blog posts associated with rhetoric, and especially our rhetorical essay. This was a completely new writing style for my, but through my rhetorical essay, I feel I was able to put together everything I learned concerning these concepts. I will definitely be using these conspts I learned this semester in my future writing .
